There’s a distinct lack of quality kart racers on PS4, but KartRider: Drift will hope it can secure a podium position from 8th March, 2023. The free-to-play outing – which has been in beta testing for some time – will make a turbocharged start from with its first season, named New World. The game will be completely crossplay across PC, Xbox One, iOS, and Android.
“Full cross-platform, crossplay will be available when Season 1 ‘New World’ arrives on 8th March,” the press release reveals. “Season One also brings with it exciting new content: brand new tracks and race modes, a season-long theme, daily player rewards and events, plus many other improvements.” There’ll be a handful of modes, including combat races, traditional races, license tests, and time attacks.
And, of course, you can look forward to plenty of unlockable cosmetics: “With a dazzling array of unique characters and karts, KartRider: Drift players have complete control over customisation options to express themselves fully and cross the finish line in style. More characters, karts, accessories, and emotes can be unlocked via the standard Racing Pass, where racers can complete different daily challenges and event challenges. New premium challenges and rewards are also available with the purchase of a Premium Racing Pass.”
Will you be giving this a go at all? It doesn’t have the brand appeal of Mario Kart, but the gameplay looks solid, and the commitment to post-release updates mean this should stay fresh for as long as the developer continues to support it.
The word " free" really leaves a bad taste in my mouth 😢😢
I appreciate it when a game developer makes a game with monetization options on purpose and then gives the game away for free. Works well for Fortnite, Genshin Impact, Warframe, Fall Guys, Rocket League, and Warzone. You kinda know what you are getting into and the cost of entry is 0 so who cares. If someone plays it and loves the game and the community then they can throw the developers some cash.
What I don't like is paying full price for a game and it having the same monetization features (looking at you Ubisoft). Even if it is a total option to get the cosmetic items in a full-price game it means they spent additional development time on items that honestly look better and cooler than the ones in the base game. It's not game-breaking for me but it is annoying.
That being said though, I would totally spend my life savings to get costumes for my Mario Kart racers.
@grapetrap ok, each to their own I guess, games like this are not for me
Beta was awful, hope the release is much better , need a good kart racer
Wonder if this will be out before or after the long lost Disney Speedstorm?
Or you could pick up the excellent crash team racing for peanuts from the ps store. It's a great kart racer and no monetization to mess around with.
