Sony’s not going to suddenly mandate online connectivity for the games included in its new PS Plus tiers, but a weekly handshake will be required to ensure you still have an active subscription. The company clarified on the PS Blog: “When playing a downloaded game from the game catalogue in PS Plus Extra and Premium plans, you’ll need to connect to PSN every seven days to validate your PS Plus membership and maintain your access to the game.”
The reason for this is fairly self-explanatory: it’s to prevent you from downloading a game and then continuing to play it offline in perpetuity. The same validation was required for PS Now as well, although it was a 14-day check-in period there.
“Please note, this step is only required for game catalogue titles in the PS Plus Extra and Premium. It does not apply to the monthly downloadable games available through PS Plus Essential,” the PS Blog post continues. PS Plus Essential is obviously just a renamed version of the existing PS Plus service, so don’t expect any changes there.

Seems fair, it's the same timeframe as NSO
I'm just going to buy Ape Escape outright thanks.
As long as its not doing checks for something I've bought outright I don't mind at all.
Play your old PlayStation games with their original machines without paying extra money for subscription. The best solution.
Did I read it wrong or did they offer the ability to buy these piece meal if you don't have the higher subs? Like say I want Ridge Racer from PSP on my PS5. Could I buy that without upgrading to the higher tier of PS Plus?
Secondly, if that's the case, would purchased copies of these games still require a weekly "check up"?
@Anti-Matter Agreed... with the exception of playing PS1/2 games on a 4KTV. The resolution just doesn't hold up well and makes it hard to read some game's text.
They answered my question in the final sentence. Sounds like games downloaded via PS+ should work forever, as long as we're members, hopefully.
@Anti-Matter unless you still have a CRT they look horrendous.
Sounds fair...Digital games you rent from the service need online check-ins to keep playing...
As long as digitally purchased games need no check-in...we're good.
I am always connected to the internet anyway so this doesn't really affect me but it is nice to know you can sort of play them offline.
@ED_209 is it though? Nintendo wants all their DLC and downloadable games validated every few hours on all secondary Switches… it’s a nightmare for my family when we travel.
@BearsAndBattles Hence why activating CRT mode is on the cards.
@Uncharted2007
I get used to see 480i and 240p from my PS2 and PS1 games on Standard HD TV. I played them with my PS2 Fat for USA games and PS2 Slim for Japan games.
Not really big deal for me as for games like DDR and other BEMANI PS2 games looked pretty good on my HD TV with 480i output.
The PS1 games looked like an upscaled GBA games on HD TV lol. It's so pixelated but I'm fine with that.
@KayOL77 that’s not why it looks terrible. On 4K systems the resolution makes the thing blurry and the text way too small. I said CRT because the resolution is correct not striped scan lines. 🤣
@Anti-Matter on 4K sets they’re terrible and the text too small. There’s no getting used to it.
Correct me if i'm wrong but sony always remind you when your active sub is about to expire thus prompting renewal so i dont understand why this is a must from them? What if you go on holiday? Are you expected to sign in via the ps app or do you require somebody goes round to your house and sign you in? Really makes no sense at all...
@Anti-Matter to be fair, though, the best you could possibly do on old kit is a PS3 Phat 60GB and then you'd only have, at most, 720p scaling for most of the games.
I still have my old games and I personally think Sony should open the emulator up to be used with discs (even if just the key to the game) for old PS1 and PS2 titles.
They also give access to those PSN (PsOne Classics) games you bought on PS3/Vita for "free" (without having to have PS Plus). That's somewhat decent.
@Anti-Matter
Not for me. Not everyone wants or has space for a load of old consoles around, particularly if in the living room...
What's wrong with that? I don't see a problem there.
Can't really see it being an issue. Unlike my Switch which can easily be taken out of the house my PS5 never really moves so is always connected to the internet
@Anti-Matter have you seen how much some of those original games cost these days. It's crazy
@Anti-Matter easier said than done unless your willing to buy converters. 99% of modern TV dont even support the connections anymore. Ive had a couple of scart to HDMI converters etc in the past and they have never been that great. Not to mention if i set up an old CRT in my front room my wife would go bananas 😂. It took long enough to get her to agree to a second TV in the corner so i could be social whilst i game.
That’s fair enough. And good to know that, should I not want to resub but am part way through a game at expiry, I can eke another week out by disconnecting the PS5 from the internet.
I'm not gonna lie, I have all the PS1 and PS2 games I could ever need on my PC and I suspect much more capable emulators then what Sony is going to offer. Still I'll be interested in picking up the odd PS1 classic on my PS5 providing it's not the PAL version
@Uncharted2007 @RainbowGazelle Has Sony stated that we can buy the PS1 games outright separately? I thought they were exclusive to the subscription service.
I'm not understanding why the PS+ Extra and Premium games require periodic validation, while the standard Essential plan games don't. What's stopping someone from playing those offline beyond an expired subscription? Why can't the same policy be applied across the board? Am I missing something?
@Anti-Matter how do you manage to maintain your Old Consoles?? Do you have a Repair/Maintenance Center for Old Consoles in your Country??or you disassemble and clean it your self. sorry for asking I’m just curious.
And what if you on holiday/vacation for two weeks ? lol
@GoodGame
If you mean you’d like to take your console with you on holiday for two weeks…well, after the first week you’ll need to find an internet connection. Not sure if you could tether it to your phone. Maybe. I could on VITA.
…seems you can, so, yeah, make sure you take your phone on holiday too and you should be good. You only need to sign in for a quick authentication, not play online.
Edit: oh, you mean what happens if you leave the console disconnection for two weeks while you’re away? Nothing really. You come home and sign in again.
@thefourfoldroot1 Oh no. I would never take a console abroad lol.
Just wondered how it would work when I 'DO' go away.
EDIT: Ah ok. Thanks
Another reason for me not to bother with it, I'm regularly offline for more than a week.
Seems fair and reasonable to me.
I still have working PS1's 2's and full fat PS3's although the only one out is the PS3 as it has backwards compatibility. If you have good humidity and heat control you can keep your hardware running for a long time. I don't have anything specific just the fact our games room is converted from basement keeps it cool and I have central humidity control as the house is 200 years old and needs it to keep maintenance costs down. The only hard part of fixing most PS1 or PS2 faults would be if it was a main chip but even those are plentiful from donor systems. PS3 is more problematic. Truth is though I very very rarely power on the PS3 and when I do it's usually to pull out a old game to compare to a remake.
Total BS Sony. A complete anti- consumer move. When microshaft aka micro$oft announced a similar policy for Xbox one hell rained down. I hope the same for you…. No thanks I’ll stick with the disk versions on my Polymega.
@Northern_munkey It really doesn't make sense why you even raise this question. I don't know what you are even worried about? I really wonder if some of you guys are just here to troll on Sony or if you guys have a genuine concern. If you go on holiday, you don't play games, then what are you worried about? You return home, you can pick up where you left off. If your sub expires when you are away, you resub when you back and then continue where you left off. If you brought your console on holiday, you connect to hotel wifi or phone tethering after a week. If you brought your console to the holiday destination where there is no internet at all, then it is a different matter and you consider to play the games you own in that case.
